James Porter Ashley was born in North Carolina in 1838. He married Susan Marcella Stikeleather in 1858. She was born in 1842. They had two children: Mary Ellen Ashley Faw born in 1859 and David Melvin born in 1861. During the Civil War, James Porter enlisted in Company A of the 26th North Carolina Infantry Regiment with his brother, Joseph, and served from 1861 to 1865. Joseph, his brother was killed on July 3, 1863 during Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg. James Porter fought at both Gettysburg and Appomattox, miraculously surviving to return home. After the war, James Porter and Susan expanded their family with the following children all born in North Carolina: Phoebe Alice born in 1866, Joseph Orin born in 1870; Lowdena Elizabeth in 1872; Lillian Evelyn; and Hamilton Thomas in 1880. Following submitted by Carole Conrad (#46532185), Mar 2015 In 1884, James Porter and Susan Ashley left their two oldest children in North Carolina and headed west with the remainder of their family. They traveled to the nearest railroad station in Marion, Virginia which was a three day trip from the old homestead. On November 12th they arrived in Pueblo and were met by Rush Fisher and Henry Hardin, also from North Carolina, who took them out to the Hardin place (near what became Rye) for a few days. They then moved to a small house on the John Graybeal (Holmes) place until December 24th. There are several different accounts of where the family lived next; but the Ashley family proved up the following homesteads: 6th Meridian 24S 67W Section 32 E ½ SE ¼; Section 33 W ½ SW ¼ both settled in 1892; Section 8 W ½ NW ¼; SW ¼ SW ¼ and NW ¼ SW ¼ settled in 1894. One of these homesteads was a relinquishment from Frank Gallimore. The Ashleys sold the property in 1900 to Roby Graybeal. He sold it to the C & S Rio Grande Railroad in 1908. The railroad purchased it for the 1862 McDaniel water rights. Later, the Bigelow family rented this property three miles south of Rye on Greenhorn Road. In 1901, James Porter moved to Pueblo and opened a mercantile store. His wife, Susan, passed away in 1902. He sold the store in 1903; returned to Rye and with his son, Hamilton Thomas bought an interest in the Sears Store on Main Street.
