Dickens, 86, of Route 30 died peacefully with his family by his side at 5:45 p.m., Sunday, August 5, 2007. John was in 5... Read More	John Dickens HANOVERTON — After a short battle with lung and liver cancer, John H. Dickens, 86, of Route 30 died peacefully with his family by his side at 5:45 p.m., Sunday, August 5, 2007. He was born June 12, 1921 to William "Bill" and Maude Adelle (Rodgers) Dickens in East Palestine. During World War II, John bravely fought overseas for his country for 42 months. He was stationed with the 453rd Anti Aircraft Automatic Weapons battalion, where he soon became Buck Sergeant responsible for communications in Battery A for both wire and air communication. John was in 5 major battles, including Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He married his adoring wife Betty Jane McDevitt December 31, 1941. They were married 58 years before she preceded him in death December 23, 2000. John and his family moved to Southern California in 1960, where he was employed as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service for 20 years. Prior to that, he worked on the Minute Man One missile at AutoNetics. After retirement, they moved back to Columbiana County to be close to family and friends. John was a member of the Huntington Beach Freemasons of California as a third degree Mason. He was a lifetime member of the East Palestine VFW where he served as Commander in 1951 and 1952. He was also a member of the First Christian Church of Lisbon. He is survived by his loving daughter Linda (Steve) Bernet; granddaughter January (Robert Jr.) Solomon; great-granddaughters Brittany Lynn and Victoria Jean Solomon; and his pride and joy, great-grandson Joseph William Solomon. John was preceded in death by brothers Raymond, Roger, Everett and Lloyd; sisters Zedda and Helen; and beloved grandson Gary Wayne Sommers, Jr. who passed away November 11, 1992. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Weber Funeral Home with Rev. H. Tyrone Fink of the First Christian Church officiating. John will be buried with full military honors at the Lisbon Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market Street, Boardman, 44512. Before John's passing, he wished to share with the members of the 453rd whom he has known for the past 60 years what an honor it has been to know each and every one of you.
