Sgt. Meredith's remains have been identified and have been returned back to Greenbrier County for burial. Born Aug. 12, 1930, in Fort Spring, he was the son of the late Joseph Lee and Virginia Dolan Meredith. Before joining the Army, he lived in Frankford, and was a member of the Frankford United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Frankford High School in 1949, where he played football, baseball, and boxing. He was a member of the Varsity Club and was president of the 10th grade class. Sgt. Meredith was a member of Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 187th Airborne, Infantry Regimental Combat Team fighting in Korea. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Sybia and Elizabeth; four brothers, Frank, Robert, Joe and Guy Meredith. Survivors include: two sisters, Lucy E. Wolfenbarger of Oak Ridge, TN, and Geneva S. Boothe of Frankford; and several nieces and nephews. A full military graveside service and burial was conducted Thursday, Oct. 22, at Rosewood Cemetery, Lewisburg. Arrangements by Longanacre Funeral Home, Fairlea. Obit contributed by Sally Miller Knoxville News Sentinel OAK RIDGE - Uncertainty has tormented Oak Ridge resident Lucy Wolfenbarger for 58 years. She never knew what happened to her baby brother. This much was undisputed: 20-year-old Army Cpl. Lawrence A. Meredith went missing in action in February 1951 during the Korean War. He later was presumed dead, and a memorial was held in 1953 in his West Virginia hometown. But questions remained unanswered and doubts lingered, Wolfenbarger, 85, said. "We've often wondered if he was living in Korea with his mind gone bad, roaming the streets," she said. Some answers arrived this week in a notebook delivered by U.S. Army personnel and filled with official notes, photos and memos. From it, Wolfenbarger learned her brother had been captured about 50 miles from Seoul, South Korea, while erecting a barbed wire fence to block pursuit by Chinese soldiers. He and other GIs were taken to a prisoner-of-war camp in North Korea. Many died there. "I didn't know he had been a POW until this week," Wolfenbarger said. "I still don't know if he starved to death or was killed. That really kind of bothers you." An elite task force of military personnel, the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command in Hawaii, helps identify and return the remains of soldiers listed as missing in past conflicts. That organization began to unravel the final chapters of Meredith's life and death in 1993. That year, North Korea gave the United Nations 34 boxes filled with the remains of U.S. soldiers who had been missing in action. Those bones were jumbled together, and it took years of research to separate and tentatively identify Meredith's remains. By 2007, there was enough evidence to ask Wolfenbarger and her younger sister if they'd submit mouth swabs for DNA testing. The military didn't explain the unusual request, she said, but the answer came this June by way of a dinnertime phone call. "The caller told me, 'We've found your brother,' " Wolfenbarger said. "I said I couldn't believe it." Now the military is helping the family prepare a final tribute to the fallen soldier. A funeral with full military honors will be conducted Oct. 22 in the small town of Lewisburg, W.Va. Promoted posthumously, Sgt. Lawrence A.
