| Description | : | SACRED To the Memory of LUKE HANKS Who was born in Anderson Dist. S.C. Nov. 15th, 1828 And was killed on Morris Island July 14th, 1863 Aged 34 Years, 7 Mos., and 29 Days. He volunteered in Capt. Cowans Co. E 20th Regnt S.C.V. on the 27th Day of December 1861, And was promoted as Sergeant For some Months previous to his death he was a gallant Soldier And was shot within fifteen feet Of the enemies rifle pits his Body was carried home by JOHN M. Hanks ______________ Sleep gallant soldier the combats O’er The long roll will be herd no more Your heroic deed in memorys shrine Fresh and green shall live thro’ time |

He was killed during that daring sortie led by Major James H. Rion of the 7th SC Battalion. It began on the evening of the 14th of July to find the postion of the Union rifle trences approaching Battery Wagner on Morris Island. Rions recon party that evening was made up of about 150 men from various regiments. Read less
