He had enlisted 3-1/2 years prior to his death and was due to be discharged in six months. In the prior three years of his military service, he had received the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, and was also was the recipient of three Purple Hearts. He was born July 8, 1945 and was raised on the family farm near Monticello, Indiana. He was a 1963 graduate of Monticello High School and played football. In his senior year was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Year.
