Cheek was born 1835 in Chapel Hill, Orange County, NC, the 3rd of 6 known surviving children (3 boys/3 girls) born to farmers Willis Cheek (ca. 1805) and his wife, Martha Williams. He was the paternal grandson of James Cheek (1762-1834) of Brunswick Co, VA who removed to Orange County, NC and married Martha "Pattie" Estes. He was the paternal grandson of James Cheek (1762-1834) of Brunswick Co, VA who removed to Orange County, NC and married Martha "Pattie" Estes. On November 2, 1856, 21-year old Nathaniel married 17-year old Emmeline Gattis, daughter of William B. Gattis of Chapel Hill. Nathaniel and Emmeline moved into his parent's farmhouse in Chapel Hill, where he pursued his trade of carpentry, and where their first child was born. The couple would eventually become parents to 5 known children: * Elisha Scidmore Cheek (1857-1929) * Ida Atwood Cheek (1860-1933) * Royster Cheek (ca. 1865) * Virgil / Virgilia Cheek (1872-1880) * A. P. Cheek (1882-1882) When Civil War came, 26-year old Nathaniel enlisted on February 26, 1862 with Company G, of the NC 11th Infantry Regiment. He was promoted to Corporal on November 30, 1863; and to Sergeant on October 11, 1864. The NC 11th were eventually moved to Virginia, where the unit was placed in General Pettigrew's, Kirkland's, and MacRae's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia. It fought on many battlefields from Gettysburg to Cold Harbor, endured the hardships of the Petersburg trenches, and saw action around Appomattox. It lost over half of the 617 at Gettysburg, reported 15 casualties at Bristoe, and surrendered 8 officers and 74 men. Sgt. Nathaniel Cheek was captured April 2, 1865 at Petersburg, VA and removed to the notorious Union POW camp at Fort Delaware, where he was confined until war's end, when he took Oath of Allegiance on 19 June 1865. Upon his release from prison, he made his way back home and was reunited with his family. Soon thereafter, they removed to Raleigh where Nathaniel was able to find work in the building growth of the City following the war. Nathaniel Cheek was reportedly killed in train accident on Hillsborough Street on March 19, 1891. He was 56 years old. His wife of 35 years survived him 30 years, passing in 1921 at age 82.
