"Former Pawnee Citizen Dead. O.P. Webster, formerly a well known old soldier citizen of Pawnee county, died at his home at Fitzgerald, Georgia, Tuesday morning, August 4th of dropsy. He would have been 70 years old September 1st. His son H.L. Webster, of Rozel, KS was called to his father's home a week before his death and was at his bedside when the end came. He brought the body to Burdett, KS for burial, arriving in Larned, KS, Saturday morning on No 11. The remains were interred in the Burdett cemetery Saturday, after services at the graveside by Rev. Ruff. Before going to Georgia, in the early 90's the deceased resided near Burdett for many years. The Tiller and Toiler, Larned, Kansas, Friday, August 20, 1909, page 8. O.P. Webster, a former well-known citizen of Pawnee county, came in the first of the week from Fitzgerald, Georgia where he is now engaged in business. He was accompanied by his daughter-in-Law, Mrs. Dan Webster, to join her husband, who has located on a farm near Rozel, KS. Mr. Webster left Pawnee county about 15 years ago and says that when he left his land west of Larned, it was practically worthless and that he almost gave it away to get rid of it, only to find upon his return to Larned that his former ownings would cash in for a good many thousand dollars. He says that in going along the streets, he sees many of his early day friends, but that most of the faces he now sees are strangers and that the old town doesn't have the same appearance that it did in the frontier days." Ovid Webster (10992318) Suggested edit: Veteran Civil War, Sergeant, Company H, 45th PA Infantry Regiment (Co H 45th PA Inf); enlisted as Corporal on 18 Sep 1861 in Tioga County PA; wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness, Spotsylvania County VA, on 6 May 1864; his brother, Henry Shepard Webster was wounded on the same day and died of his wounds; SGT Ovid Webster recovered and returned to duty; promoted to Sergeant on 1 Jul 1865; separated 17 Jul 1865.
