His father's name is Raymond Arthur Grassfield, and his mother's name is Loretta (maiden name unkown). Richard is the oldest of seven children; he has five brothers: David Grassfield, Darrol Grassfield, Donny Grassfield, Arnie Grassfield, Melvin Grassfield, and one sister Erma (Grassfield). Richard graduated from Anamosa High school in 1948, and joined the Air Force in 1949. While he was stationed at Walker Air Force base in Roswell, New Mexico, he met Sallie Lou Looney; they married in Portales, New Mexico, on December 20, 1952. Richard has three children: (a daugther) Brenda Sue Potter, (a son whom preceeded him in death) Charles Ray Grassfield, and (a daughter) Cheryl Ann Sipes. Richard served two tours in Vietnam, about thirteen-months each tour. After serving twenty-two-years, ten-months, and eighteen-days, he retired from the Air Force, as a Master Sergeant in 1972. Richard then took his family and moved to Morley, Iowa, where he went to work at the Post Office in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After retiring from the Air Force, he ran and maintained the LSM computer for the Cedar Rapids Post Office. Five years later in 1977 Richard had a massive heart attack and was forced into early retirement from the U S Postal Service. Richard then bought a small farm in Leeton, Missouri. My dad continued to have severe heart problems until his death. Richard was married to his wife Sallie Lou (Looney) for thirty-years. Richard was preceeded in death by both his parents and his son Charles Ray. My Dad loved working the land and growing things. He enjoyed woodworking and was an excellent carpenter. His favorite food was potato soup. My dad has been gone for twenty-two-years and I miss him just as much today, as when he first passed on.
