His mother learned of the accident when she returned from Sunday school and found a telegram containing the official notice of death on the porch. Mr. Myers was at work at the Peru Naval Air base. In the message, Col. A.S. Albro, commanding officer of the Army air base at Almogordo, N.M. expressed the deep sorrow of the post at the death of the Wabash youth, and asked for inforamtion regarding the disposition of the body, which will be returned here for burial. Forest Ranger Arthur Gibson in telling of the accident said the plane circled low over Magdalena and then headed toward the mountain. "Shortly afterward there was a terrific explosion on the top of Mount Baldy, the highest point on the range. It could be seen from all over, when I arrived with the rescue party. The plane was scattered all over the country." Young Myers was inducted into the Army through selective service in the summer of 1941. He had been trying before to get into the Air Corps, and succeeded in enlisting on Sept. 22, 1941. He received his preliminary training at Chanute Field, Rantoul, Ill., and afterward obtained advance instruction at McGill Field, Tampa, Fla., Panama City, Fla., Salt Lake City, Utah, Walla Walla, Wash., Redmond, Ore. and Boise, Idaho before being sent to the Almogordo air base Sept. 28. A letter which his parents received Saturday stated he expected to complete his trianing in New Mexico in the next 13 or 14 days, and would be transferred to another center subsequently. He was born here June 30, 1919, the son of Bert and Marie (Campbell) Myers. He attended and was graduated from Linlawn High school in 1937. During his school years he took an active part in athletics, playing both guard and forward positons on the Linlawn basketball squad. Sgt. Myers who was an aerial engineer aboard the bomber, was employed at the Fort Meter Box company prior to entering the service. He was a member of the First Christian church here. His death was a profound shock to his many friends in the community, who remember him as an upright and loyal American citizen. Surviving besides the parents are one brother, Jay B. Myers, south of the city and one sister, Mrs. Robert Gaunt, living east of Wabash. The body is being shipped to the Hoover Funeral home and will arrive in Wabash at 4:45 o'clock Thursday afternoon. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock in the Christian church here. The Rev. L.P. Buroker, former pastor of the Christian church who now resides at Lamont, Mich., will conduct the service assisted by the Rev. Fred Wolff, pastor. Sgt. Myers was baptized into the Chrisitan church by the Rev. Buroker. Burial will be in Falls cemetery.
