Walter was born in Newton, Kansas on June 18, 1912 to German speaking immigrant parents. The family moved to Paso Robles in 1914 to join the Mennonite Congregation of Willow Creek. As a youth, he worked breaking horses on various ranches and helped on the family farm with his five brothers and eight sisters. Walter joined the U.S. Marine Corps on the 18th day of December, 1941. Walter was born in Newton, Kansas on June 18, 1912 to German speaking immigrant parents. The family moved to Paso Robles in 1914 to join the Mennonite Congregation of Willow Creek. As a youth, he worked breaking horses on various ranches and helped on the family farm with his five brothers and eight sisters. Walter joined the U.S. Marine Corps on the 18th day of December, 1941. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre from November 2, 1942 until July 29, 1945. He participated in action against the enemy at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, Saipan, Tinian, Okinawa, and the Ryukyu Islands. As a tank platoon commander, SSgt. Fieguth was awarded the Navy Cross for heroism serving with the Second Marine Division on Tarawa and the Gilbert Islands. He was also awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for heroic accomplishments on the Islands of Saipan and Tinian. Walter is written up in the book, "Follow Me:, the story of the Second Marine Division. After he was honorably discharged, Walter attended the University of California, Davis, graduating in 1947. He was then employed by the Tejon Ranch Companyu in Lebec, California, where he worked for 31 years before retiring in 1978 as the Game Management and Special Services Manager. After his retirement Walter and Eleanor moved to Foresthill to be near a brother and two sisters. There he built his own home in Foresthill where he and his beloved wife lived. Through the years he loved to entertain guests, and welcomed all comers for a game of checkers. Walter was a long-standing member of VFW, Post 11294, and the American Legion, Post 587. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Eleanor, and six children; his daughter, Kathleen, and her husband, Frank; sons, Ralph, Walter, and his wife, Nancee; Joe and his wife Cathy; Marty; and Kurt, and his wife Sheri. He also has nine grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren, and three deceased grandchildren. Walter was a wise and heroic father figure, a loving and faithful husband, and a devoted and unwavering man of God. He will be missed by his family, by his church family, and by all who ever knew him. A funeral service will take place on Friday, March 11, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Canyon View Assembly of God, 23221 Foresthill Rd., Foresthill, CA. Burial will follow at the New Auburn Cemetery, 1040 Collins Dr., Auburn, CA. Navy Cross Citation The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Platoon Sergeant Walter Fieguth (MCSN: 335667), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for extraordinary heroism and devotion to duty while serving with Company B, SECOND Tank Battalion, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces at Betio Island, Tarawa Atoll, Gilbert Islands, on 21 November 1943. When his platoon of light tanks grounded on a coral reef, Platoon Sergeant Fieguth unhesitatingly waded to within two hundred yards of the shore despite intense, persistent enemy machine-gun fire to locate a shallow water path through which to lead his platoon ashore and, returning to his tank, attempted a landing in water approximately three feet deep. Successfully leading the tank a distance of eight hundred yards across a shell-pocked reef and a mined beach, he then contacted the Battalion Commander and subsequently made his way back to the beach to guide the remainder of the platoon ashore under cover of darkness. Platoon Sergeant Fieguth's splendid initiative, aggressive determination and unselfish devotion to duty in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
