Description	:	CUMBERLAND - William Bernard Laurent, 84, of Cumberland, died Feb. 23, 2008 at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va. Born Feb. 18, 1924 in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Irving Frank and Kathleen Helena (Kane) Laurent. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Edna McKalvey and one brother, Irvin Laurent. Read More	CUMBERLAND - William Bernard Laurent, 84, of Cumberland, died Feb. 23, 2008 at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, W.Va. Born Feb. 18, 1924 in Cumberland, he was the son of the late Irving Frank and Kathleen Helena (Kane) Laurent. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Edna McKalvey and one brother, Irvin Laurent. Mr. Laurent attended Fort High School, served in the U.S. Army 8th Infantry Division from 1943 to 1946, in the Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe, where he received a Purple Heart from wounds sustained in the Battle of the Bulge, a Combat Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star, three Battle Stars, World War II Victory Ribbon, American Theater Service Ribbon, European-African, and Middle Eastern Ribbon, and Good Conduct Ribbon. He attended barber school in Baltimore, was a self-employed barber since 1950, owner of Bill's Barber Shop on 16 East 1st St. and previously worked with his father at Laurent Barber Shop on Williams St. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Cumberland V.F.W., American Legion, Disabled Veterans', Former Purple Heart Club, Cumberland Moose Lodge, Cumberland Eagles and the Goodfellowship Club. He also participated in the Allegany County Fraternal organizations Shuffleboard Leagues since 1946 where he was currently a member of the Knights of Columbus Shuffleboard Team. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Lois Lee (Shriver) Laurent; son, Barry Raymond Laurent and wife Cecilia, Linthicum; granddaughter, Amberly Lynn Laurent, Glen Burnie; and great-granddaughter, Olivia Jade Laurent, Glen Burnie. At Mr. Laurent's request, his body will be cremated. There will be a memorial service held at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland (scarpellifh.com), on Saturday at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Milton A. Hipsley officiating. Inurnment will be in the Maryland State Veterans' Cemetery, Rocky Gap, Flintstone. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 300 E.
