Held prisoner at Libby Prison, Virginia, Danville Prison, Virginia, and Andersonville, Georgia. Admitted to prison hospital with scorbutus. Prisoner until April 6, 1865. Survived captivity and was released at Vicksburg, Mississippi, on April 6, 1865. Sent to Benton Barracks, Missouri, on April 22 then on May 14, 1865, sent to Annapolis, Maryland. Obituary: Cumberland Evening Times on Tuesday, May 1, 1923. William Lowery, 84, dead at Corriganville, in Prime Possessed Great Strength [NOTE: So far we have determined that he was born in 1841 so would have been 82 when he died] William Lowery, a retired farmer in Corriganville, and a Union veteran of the Civil War, who saw hard service, having been in Andersonville prisonfor 17 months, died last night at Allegany Hospital here, after a short illness. He had been rarely ill during his 84 years, his worst physical ailment having been at Andersonville from lack of proper food. When he was released he was about dead and could barely raise his body on his hands and knees. He quickly recovered from the effects of prison life and when he later worked in the Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad shops at Mount Savage, he was noted for his physical endurance and his feats of strength. He could life with ease heavy objects which others could hardly budge. For about 15 years Mr. Lowery lived at Duquesne, Pa., returning to his farm at Corriganville about six years ago. He was a native of Pennsylvania, but he came to Maryland early in life and he served in the Union Army in a Maryland regiment. [NOTE: He served as a Sgt in Company K, 18th Regiment, Pennsylvania Cavalry]...His widow has been bedfast with rheumatism for the past sever or eight years.
