Description	:	Sharon Ann Walter was born Sept. 13, 1934 at Sioux Falls, the daughter of Robert and Ella (Volsch) Walter. She grew up in the Sioux Falls and Wall Lake area graduating from Hartford High School in 1952. While in school she was proud to have had perfect attendance her entire 12 years. While in high school she also was selected to attend Girls State. She went on to graduate from Iowa State Teachers College in 1957. Read More	Sharon Ann Walter was born Sept. 13, 1934 at Sioux Falls, the daughter of Robert and Ella (Volsch) Walter. She grew up in the Sioux Falls and Wall Lake area graduating from Hartford High School in 1952. While in school she was proud to have had perfect attendance her entire 12 years. While in high school she also was selected to attend Girls State. She went on to graduate from Iowa State Teachers College in 1957. On May 26, 1955 she married Blaine Smit at the Little Brown Church in Nassua, Iowa. The couple farmed south of Lennox until moving into Lennox in 1982. Blaine died on Dec. 26, 1991. Sharon moved into Sioux Falls in 1998. She had been in a committed relationship with, her childhood friend, Douglas Gumke for the past four years. Sharon was an active member of Faith Presbyterian Church where she served as Elder and Treasurer for many years. She belonged to the Center for Active Generations in Sioux Falls where she served as a board member and computer instructor. She was a volunteer for S.H.I.I.N.E. In the past she also served on the boards of N.A.T.P. and Deer Run Condo Association. She had belonged to the Lennox American Legion Auxiliary as well as having been a leader for 4-H and Girl Scouts. Sharon traveled extensively with friends, her family and Douglas. She was fearless and a creative person. Besides her parents and husband, Sharon was preceded in death by two infant siblings, Gloria and Halden. Grateful for having shared her life are her very best friend, Douglas Gumke, Sioux Falls; children: Robert (Karla) Smit, Lennox, Shelly Smit, Lennox, Sharla (Tracy) West, Lennox and Susan Smit, Sioux Falls; eight grandchildren: Marissa Fiedler, Sheldon and Cassandra Swanson, Jennifer and Jessica Smit, Gordon, Jessie and Traesha West; two great-grandchildren: Justin Bentley and Sam Becker; sister-in-law, Thelma Nordman and niece, Patricia (James) Koerner, Lennox as well as other relatives and a host of friends.
