Description	:	Sharon Kay Holmberg, age 69, passed away on April 24, 2015, in Omaha, NE. She is preceded in death by her parents, Harry T. and Helen E. Holmberg and special friend and companion, Erik Anderson. Sharon is survived by her brother Bernard (Carolyn) Holmberg, sisters, Rose Marie (John) Kastl, Marilyn (Ernest) Boyden, and Ardith (Daniel) Ryberg, and many nieces, nephews and close friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Harry T. and Helen E. Holmberg and special friend and companion, Erik Anderson. Sharon is survived by her brother Bernard (Carolyn) Holmberg, sisters, Rose Marie (John) Kastl, Marilyn (Ernest) Boyden, and Ardith (Daniel) Ryberg, and many nieces, nephews and close friends. Sharon led a very remarkable and productive life. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in nursing from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1967. Following her graduation, she moved to New York City where she took up nursing duties at Bellevue Hospital. She moved to Mt. Saini hospital where she worked as a head nurse in the coronary care unit. Sharon earned her Master’s degree from New York University Medical Center in 1972, while working in the hospital as a staff/head nurse in the psychiatric unit. She then moved to New Hampshire where she was clinical supervisor for psychiatric-mental health nursing at the School of Nursing in Durham. She taught nursing at Mount St. Mary College in Hookset, and at St. Anselm’s College in Manchester. In 1977, Sharon received a special two year study stipend for study of Psychiatric Rehabilitation at the Swedish Institute in Stockholm, Sweden where she earned a post-masters certificate in social welfare. After returning to the United States in 1978, Sharon accepted a position as professor of Nursing at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, along with an appointment as unit chief in the Connecticut Mental Health Center. She left Yale in 1988 to attend the University of Rochester in New York, earning her Ph.D. in 1994. Upon completion of her degree, she accepted a position as associate professor of nursing at Indiana University School of Nursing where she remained for five years before returning to New York in 2000 to teach as a tenured professor in the State Universities of New York system, first at New Paltz and finally at Binghamton, New York. Sharon had many interests and hobbies. Foremost was her love for travel which she did extensively through Europe, Asia, and the Balkans. She researched the family ancestry while in Sweden, liked knitting and sewing, liked to dance, and was active in a Swedish dance group. It was there that she met her special friend (partner) of 20+ years, Erik Anderson. She loved to cross country ski and had a house in Hope, New York where she spent winter weekends skiing. A memorial service will be held for Sharon on May 18th at 10:30 a.m. in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Bristow, NE. Memorials received will go to the Lutheran Church in Bristow or to the University of Nebraska College of Nursing.
