A memorial fund has been established. Sheila Mae Butters was born August 28, 1941 in Randalia to parents Dale and Nora (Fox) Potter. She graduated from Oelwein High School with the class of 1959. Sheila was united in marriage with Charles “Ted” Butters on October 31, 1959 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein. Sheila had been employed with Woolworths, Modern Cleaners, Amoco Foam and retired as Activity Coordinator from Mercy Living Plus in Oelwein. Sheila was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, The Rosary Society, and was named Oelwein’s Citizen of the Year in 2009. Sheila was a source of comfort, encouragement, strength and love to all her family and friends. If you ever needed to be uplifted, she would come to you with a smile and a hug, and talk with you until the world felt right again. When Sheila couldn’t be there in person, she would send you a card to tell you everything was going to be ok and that you were doing a great job. Sometimes those cards would show up without you even mentioning you needed her; somehow she always just knew. Other times cards or letters would show up telling you to get your act together. In those times it was just what you needed as well. She also expresses her compassion through her love of baking and sharing that joy with the people around her. You could feel the love in each delicious bite of her famous sugar cookies. We will forever miss her stories, hugs and words of encouragement. Heaven gained a great lady in Sheila’s passing. Left to celebrate Sheila’s life are her children: Scott (Lanette) Butters of Fayette, Susan (Dave) Rau of Marion and Sandy (Mike) Schulmeister of Oelwein; her nine grandchildren and one step-grandson; her thirteen great-grandchildren and two step-grandsons; her siblings: Orion Zirtzman of Cedar Rapids, Delbert (Linda) Potter of Oelwein and Daryl (Frances) Potter of Oelwein; as well as many more relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Ted; her son Mike Butters; her step-grandson Bryan Schulmeister; her siblings: Leroy Potter, Bill Potter, Nolan Potter and Doc Weeks.
