Sept. 3 (Special) -- Shelby Daniel Ellis, 13-year-old son of Shelby Dean Ellis and Sara Clarice Lupo Ellis of the Hickory Grove section of Horry County, was killed by lightning about 1:30 p.m. today near his home. Sept. 3 (Special) -- Shelby Daniel Ellis, 13-year-old son of Shelby Dean Ellis and Sara Clarice Lupo Ellis of the Hickory Grove section of Horry County, was killed by lightning about 1:30 p.m. today near his home. Young Ellis had gone to a barn to put a cow inside as a storm was approaching. A short time later his mother called to him. When she received no answer, she went to investigate and found him lying in front of the barn. Lightning, which was also caused heavy damage to the front of the barn, sent a bolt of current through the boy's body. Coroner John S. Dix and Deputy Sheriff J.D. Stanley said. Dix said no inquest would be held ruling the boy was killed accidentally by lightning. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Hickory Grove Baptist Church, with the pastor, Rev. Leroy Elvis, pastor and the Rev. Richard Smith, pastor of the Salem Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Anderson Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Donald Lee, Wayne Chestnut, Anthony Holmes, Wandell Carroll, Jimmy Anderson and Joe Earl Lee. Young Ellis was to have entered eighth grade at Conway High School Thursday. He attended the Hickory Grove Baptist Church. Surviving besides his parents are two brothers, Roger Ellis and Daniel Ellis, both of Rt. 1, Conway; five sisters, Mrs. Carey Hall, Sandra Ellis, Bonnie Ellis, Karen Ellis and Tamara Ellis; the paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. C.C. Ellis of Myrtle Beach, and the maternal grandmother, Mrs. D.M. Lupo, Rt. 1, Conway.
