Few knew he was sick, but the summons came suddenly. It is only a little over a year, since his friends were rejoicing in his happy marriage. Now a young wife is left with other relatives to mourn his loss. He was much beloved, of quiet, retiring disposition, true honest and congenial. Everyone loved Sherman and it is hard to realize he is no longer here. (transcribed by Judy Mayfield) Augusta Journal Augusta, Kansas Monday, May 25, 1908 page 2 Gone Home. Eli Sherman Houston was born in Butler county, Kansas, about half way between Augusta and El Dorado, July 1st, 1883, and died in the same community May 22, 1908, aged 24 years, 10 months and 22 days. The cause of his death was appendicitis. He only lived a few days, and died before an operation could be performed. He suffered intensely until anesthetics could be administered. The deceased was married March 6th, 1907 to Miss Lucy Virginia Rutherford of the same community. He united with the Baptist church about five years ago, and lived a consistent Christian life until his death. He was held in high esteem by all who knew him, as was evidenced by the large funeral as well as many verbal testimonies of friends and neighbors. The funeral was conducted from his residence by Rev. J.N. Kidd, pastor of the Baptist church of Augusta, last Sunday, the 24th inst. at 10:30 a.m., and his remains were interred in the Sutton cemetery. He leaves a young wife, a mother, two brothers and two sisters. His father died about six years ago and two sisters died in their infancy. (transcribed by Judy Mayfield)
