He was preceded in death by his parents Sam Cheetum Lewing and Edna Leola (Manasco) Lewing; wife Nell Lewing; brothers Ray Lewing and Herbert Lewing; sisters Bonnie Smith and Elizabeth Ann Lewing. He is survived by his son ; sisters ; granddaughter ; grandsons; along with a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Sherman Lewing, Sr. was born into this world Friday, May 22, 1925, son of Samuel Cheetum Lewing and Edna Leola Manasco from Fisher, LA. He worked hard on the family farm with his parents and twelve siblings. As a child, delivered and sold concessions to serviceman during maneuvers in the area. He learned how to fly planes as a child with military members. He was very young and only fifteen when he joined the military in 1940. He served from 1940 to 1944, as a TEC 5, with the 81st Wild Cat Division, the first amphibious unit of the Army. He logged over 70 thousand miles on water. General McArthur took him under his wing, they called him “Blue”. He would deliver mail and tobacco to McArthur. He was awarded numerous medals and nominated for McArthur’s Honor Guard. When Sherman returned home to Fisher, he bought his first Ford Mercury and would help the highway patrol run down other cars! He attended trade school in Many then went to work in the oilfield in Texas City. He was severely burned and one of the few survivors from the April 16, 1947 explosion. He returned home and shortly after met the love of his life, Nell Royal of Gandy, Louisiana while she was working at Horn’s Drug Store. They married and had one child. Sherman moved his family to Killeen, Texas and embarked on a long career with the Civil Service. He was Head of Transportation Motor Pool at Ft. Hood and retired after twenty-five years of service. He was over 350 employees and responsible for every vehicle entering and exiting the military base. He often flew in Air Force One and Two and was very fond of President Johnson who shared his love for Cuban Cigars. He worked with three presidents while there. He started his love of gardening while living in Killeen. He loved being outside and had large fruit orchards and tropical plants and trees. He retired and built his home in Florien, Louisiana where his wife continued her hair salon. He loved landscaping and always kept fruit orchards in his backyard and gardening fresh vegetables. This was one of the happiest times of his life, he was retired for 50 years of his life. Sherman was always busy working. He managed properties in Killeen and ran car wash in Florien. Sherman was a very quiet dignified and respectful man that was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and son. He had a big heart and compassionate towards his family’s friends. He shared a special bond with his granddaughter and great grandsons. Later in life he battled throat cancer and took care of his wife for 12 years at home. They were married for 67 years. He was “True Blue” to his sweetheart. He loved his son and was very proud of him and his family. He was immensely proud of his great grandsons for joining the Military. He went home to his Lord and Savior on Monday, July 29, 2019.
