Morton bought the cabin with the intention of retiring there someday. He was able to do that in 1980. Sherman William Morton, 78, formerly of Sioux Falls, died Monday, March 8, 1999, at a hospital in Chandler, Ariz. He was an avid hunter and liked to hunt for ducks, geese and pheasant. He also liked to play golf. He was born July 26, 1920, near Estherville, Iowa. He graduated from Estherville High School in 1937. He attended Estherville Junior College and received his bachelor's degree from Augustana College in 1949. He served as a captain and a flight instructor in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He married Lois Ulrickson on Nov. 26, 1949. He worked for 23 years with John Morrell & Co. in Sioux Falls, Philadelphia and Los Angeles as a salesman. He returned to Sioux Falls in 1969. He worked for Dual Manufacturing for eight years and then sold insurance. His wife died in 1975. He married Peg Frost Edgerton on Feb. 27, 1977, in Sioux Falls. He was a member of the Masonic Northstar Lodge No. 447, the El Riad Shrine, past Emperor of the Rickshaw Unit in Sioux Falls. He was the Past Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge in Storm Lake, Iowa, and a past member and president of Toastmasters in Sioux Falls. He also belonged to Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Unlimited and Snow Valley Goose Club. He was a member of Palo Verde and Cottonwood Country Clubs in Sun Lakes, Ariz., and Valley View Country Club in Sisseton. In addition to his wife, survivors include three daughters: Vione Morton and Debra Burg both of Naperville, Ill., and Pamela Horlitz of Red Wing, Minn. one son, Owen of Schoharie, N.Y. two stepdaughters: Darcy McManus of Port Washington, Wis., and Debby Swartwood of Jacksonville, Fla. one stepson, Scott Edgerton of Nashville, Tenn. four grandchildren and six stepgrandchildren. Services begin at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lands Lutheran Church in rural Hudson, with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at George Boom Funeral Home in Sioux Falls, with a masonic service at 7 p.m. Memorials may be directed toward the Shrine Travel Fund and Ducks Unlimited.
