The gun, a 38-special revolver, was held by John Henson, 22, Webb reached to demonstrate how he would push away the revolver and as he pushed on the weapon it was discharged. The bullet struck the patrolman just below the heart and passed through the body. Webb staggered two steps and slumped to the floor. In two minutes, when a physician arrived, the officer apparently was not breathing. He was rushed in an ambulance to the hospital and died immediately after arriving there. Henson was panic-stricken after the accident. Officers were unable to quiet him and they found it necessary to take him to his home. Henson is the youngest officer in the police department and was employed September 24th of this year. Three patrolmen were in the police station when the accident occurred. Don Colaw was reparing his gun holster and belt, while the other two officers were discussing methods of taking a pistol from a bandit. The policemen had been using an old, unloaded gun earlier to demonstrate these methods. Henson said today that he and Colaw were in the police station when Webb arrived last night. "Webb and Colaw practiced with the guns while I was standing watching them," Henson explained. "Colaw had Webb put the gun in his back and drew the gun away before Webb could snap the trigger. They did the same thing, with Colaw pointing the gun towards Webb's stomach." "Webb said that he wouldn't hold the gun out at length, and I said I wouldn't either. I was demonstrating how I would hold the gun, pointing it at Webb from my right hip. Webb grabbed the gun barrel with his right hand and the gun automatically discharged." Chief John E. Lindquist was on Main Street when the accident occurred. He was called, and arrived at the station less than a minute after Webb was shot. Lindquist said Webb was unable to say a word, although he appeared to be conscious. Colaw'sdecription of the accident was virtually the same that given by Henson. Colaw said he was not paying much attention to the other officers when the shot was fired. Henson, he said, appeared dazed after he saw Webb fall to the floor in the lobby of the police station. Henson was unable to realize what had happened. Colaw called a physician and an ambulance immediately, and he summoned Chief Lindquist with the electric police signal. Chief Lindquist remained on police duty until early this morning with Patrolmen H.S. Nelson and Colaw. Lee Knapp, a fireman, was transferred to the police department today. He served as a policeman before he was employed in the fire department. Webb was born April 30, 1899, in this county and he was reared in Chanute. He was employed with the police department May 3, 1929. He was a member of the Eagles Lodge. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas E. Webb, were expected today from Grandview, Ark. He is survived by his widow and parents; two children by a former marriage, George Thomas, who lives south of Chanute, and Melvin, who is staying with is grandparents in Grandview, Ark.; and eight brothers and sisters, Mrs. Luke Lasley, Mrs. Marion J. Allison, Mrs. Hooley Frank, Mrs. John Hutchinson, Clifford, Clarence and Kenneth Webb all of Chanute, and Mrs. C.E. Tripp of Fredonia. His brothers have been working recently in Nebraska and they were informed of the death by telegram last night. Funeral services will be held Sunday. Definite arrangements have not been made awaiting the arrival of his parents. Burial will be in Elmwood.
