Newman, for about thirteen years a resident of this community, died in St. Vincent's hospital in Sioux City last Friday following an abdominal operation with complications of pneumonia and peritonitis. The remains were brought to Hawarden and funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the R.C. Robertson home and at the Baptist Temple, with Evangelist J.R. Nelson officiating, assisted by Prof. M.N. Skadsheim. Interment was made in Grace Hill cemetery. Sherman Wesley Newman, son of Claudius and Belle Newman, was born Dec. 31, 1894, in Muhlenberg county, Kentucky, and died in Sioux City Dec. 11, 1931, at the age of 36 years, 11 months and 11 days. On Jan. 18, 1913, he was united in marriage with Bessie Mae Kennedy and to the union two sons were born, Jasper, aged 18, and Hubert, aged 16. Mr. Newman's mother preceded him in death 21 years, his father passed away less than a year ago and one sister, Ethel, died 16 years ago. Besides his widow and two sons, those left to mourn his passing include his stepmother, besides four sisters, one step-sister and four brothers as follows: Mrs. J.J. Robertson, Hawarden; Mrs. J. Jeffries, Elk Point, S.D.; Mrs. Gus Leurs, Sherard, Miss.; Mrs. Frank Locke, Greenville, Ky.; Charles and Howard Newman, both of Hawarden; Slayton Newman, Chatsworth, and Roscoe Newman of Westfield. On April 7, 1918, Mr. Newman moved with his family to Hawarden and spent the remainder of his life in this community. He was a kind husband, a loving father and a warm hearted, sympathetic neighbor. By these characteristics he endeared himself to those who knew him, and those who knew him best loved him most. As a boy he was taught the principles of the Christian life and always held sacred that part of his experience. An outstanding trait was his high regard for religion in any form or expression. Four weeks before his death he had a marked change in experience. He confessed wrongs to his fellow men and expressed a firm determination to live a better Christian life. His sudden illness came as he in his own way was trying to work out in action his new resolution. During his illness he displayed a remarkable degree of patience in spite of intense suffering. Several times during his sickness he expressed the firm conviction that he was right with God and did not fear death. When told he could not live longer he met this crisis with the greatest calm. The last words he uttered assured the loved ones who were ministering to his suffering body that he believed in a life beyond the present. This "blessed hope" buoyed up his courage and gives comfort and solace to his loved ones who remain. The Independent (Hawarden, Iowa) 12/17/1931
