Shipman Newkirk lived at the southwest corner of Jackson and West Des Moines Street, in a place built by Dr Edward Barton in the 1850's to be used as a general store. Shipman bought in in 1856. and used it as a stage coach inn on the River to River Road between Illinois and Nebraska. Newkirk worked with his friend Josiah B Grinnell in providing shelter along the Underground Railway. His hotel had secret rooms for runaway slaves and he once provided shelter for John Brown of...
