Mitchell Family Funeral Home is caring for Shirley and her family. Shirley Ann Probst was born on May 11, 1932 in State Center to William and Ida Eckhart Probst. She graduated from high school in State Center in 1949 and went on to take some Nursing Aide courses. On January 20, 1952, Shirley was united in marriage to Richard "Dick" Southard at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Shirley had worked at Anson Elementary in the lunch room and was Dick's secretary when they worked at Southard Implement. Shirley was a devoted member at St. Paul Lutheran where she was involved in the choir, WELCA and the Ladies Circle. Shirley's faith was very important to her. She also enjoyed playing cards, going clothes and shoe shopping, gardening, canning, was a fantastic cook, and loved music, especially singing with the church choir. Above all else, Shirley was the "glue of the family", and enjoyed putting on dinners and celebrations. Shirley is survived by her daughters: Teresa (Dan Jackson) Southard of Marshalltown, Deborah Southard of Urbandale, Diane (Loyd) Nelson of Marshalltown and Denise Spinler of Marshalltown. Grandchildren: Chad (Heather Ward) Southard, Bryce Nelson, Amber (Brian) Doser, Breanne (Tyler) Maddick and Emily (Mike) Block. Great-grandchildren: Michela, Kennedy, Avery, Caden, Logan, Jayden, Hunter, Talyn and Aspyn as well as great-great grandchildren: Lyndon, Braylee and Jaxton. She is also survived by her sheltie, "Zoey". Shirley is preceded in death by her husband, Dick; parents, William and Ida; sisters, Marcella Riese and Gladys Conrad along with multiple sheltie dogs over the years. The family of Shirley would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Glenwood Place, Comfort Keepers and the Iowa River Hospice Home for their exceptional care for Shirley.
