Following Mildred's death, Shirley was adopted by her maternal grandparents, Lillie R. (Hahn) and Frank C. Brand.

Shirley graduated from Plainview (Nebraska) High School. Shirley married Loren D. Beed and together they had three children, DaleAnn, Vaughn and Jody.

After many years in Nebraska, Shirley and Loren relocated to Mesa, Arizona. During her career Shirley worked in cosmetic sales and telemarketing. Shirley's family meant the world to her and she was a wonderful example of what a Nana could be.
