North Platte Telegraph November 16, 2008 Shirley Arlene Benge, 72, of Gothenburg, Neb., died Nov. 13.Shirley, born Dec. 25, 1935, was the daughter of Dorothy M. Stamm and Raymond C. Benge of Benkelman, Neb. Shirley had many life challenges and struggles in her 72 years but she met those difficulties to the best of her abilities. She had a loving extended family who remember her as a laughing, giggling girl who loved music, cats, babies, movies at the theater, candy, Diet Coke and popcorn, wearing rings and colorful necklaces, new clothes, receiving little gifts and her mother's cooking. She had a phenomenal gift of memory and her sisters called her the family historian. Her sister, nieces and nephews remember that Christmas trips home always included Shirley's birthday party on Christmas Eve, always with her favorite choice of food: her mother's famous chili. Shirley taught us to cherish the simple joys of life. Shirley was born and lived her early years in Benkelman except for a few years when the family lived in McCook, Neb., during World War II. She lived in Gothenburg from the early 1970s until her death. She first resided at Parkview Board and Care Home where she made many wonderful friends. She entered Hilltop Nursing Home in July 2004. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Dorothy and Raymond Benge, and older sister, D. Joyce Morris. Shirley is survived by her younger sister, Janice A. Jorgenson of Sunnyvale, Calif.; brother-in-law, Thomas Morris and wife, Joan of Sun City, Ariz.; nieces, Shauna Morris Lockwood and husband, Ronald, of Kemmerer, Sharla Morris Allen and husband, James of Cheyenne; nephews, J. Trent Jorgenson of Los Gatos, Calif., and Kirt Jorgenson and wife, Elizabeth of Madrid, Spain; grandnieces, Jessie and Amy Lockwood, Natalie Allen and Sofia Jorgenson; grandnephews, Sam Lockwood and Andrew Allen. Donations in Shirley's name may be made to Hope Services, 30 Las Colinas Lane, San Jose, CA 95119. This wonderful organization assists developmentally disabled individuals to live and participate in their communities. Cremation services have been provided. Graveside services at the Benkelman Cemetery will be announced later. Wyoming Tribune-Eagle November 27, 2008
