Shirley Elizabeth Reid Webster was born on November 11, 1934 to Kirby V. Reid, Sr. and Lucille Hatch Reid in the town of Mayodan, North Carolina. She was a graduate of Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina, and also obtained her masters degree from the University of North Carolina. She taught the second grade in the public school systems in Raleigh, North Carolina and Madison, North Carolina. She taught her second grade pupils the love of classical music and how to speak words of French. She often paid out of her own funds, fees, materials, and field trips for her pupils who were unable to afford same. She loved children and greatly appreciated singing for them. She was an early leader for public preschool education of young children. She was a talented pianist and mezzo soprano and loved the music of the composer, George Gershwin, and Frank Sinatra. She was a member with the Woman’s College Glee Club during her college days at “WC.” She was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Messiah, where she was baptized, confirmed, married and organist there for several years. Shirley became a devoted Wake Forest Demon Deacon fan and enjoyed friendship with many Deacon Club members, coaches, and officials at Wake Forest University. She was proud of and loved her hometown of Mayodan. She was predeceased by her parents, brothers, Robert Reid, and K.V. Reid, Jr. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, S. J. (Jack) Webster, Jr., who was a loving and caring spouse during her illnesses. She is also survived by her son, S. J. (Pete) Webster, III, and wife Anita, and granddaughter Brittany R. Webster, and a special sister-in-law, Gertrude C. Dorn of Pawley’s Island, S.C. Shirley received love and care by her caregiver, Carolyn Carroll. Shirley’s family wishes to express their deep appreciation to Alvernice Barnes, Amy Matley, and Joanna Price, and other staff members for their kind and compassion care given to her during her long battle with Alzheimer’s at the Penn Nursing Center. She will be missed by her loving family and friends. A celebration of her wonderful life will be held at her beloved Church, the Episcopal Church of the Messiah at 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 22, 2017 in her beloved town of Mayodan. Burial will follow at the Woodland Cemetery in Madison. A reception after burial will be held at the fellowship hall at the Madison Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends other times at the residence.
