Shirley was born January 19, 1918 in Grand Island, NE. to Oren Grant and Ethel V. (Barnes) Horn. Shirley grew up in the Grand Island, NE. area and the North Platte, NE. area. Shirley was born January 19, 1918 in Grand Island, NE. to Oren Grant and Ethel V. (Barnes) Horn. Shirley grew up in the Grand Island, NE. area and the North Platte, NE. area. She attended schools in both areas and attended school through the 8th grade in the North Platte, NE. area. Shirley was united in marriage Floyd Johnston in Grand Island in February 1942. The couple lived in the Grand Island, NE. area and the North Platte, NE. area. To this union four children were born. Shirley was united in marriage to John "Jack" Chipps on July 9, 1979 in Phillipsburg, Kansas. They lived in North Platte, NE. and then moved to Grand Island, NE. The couple then moved to South Dakota, where John worked in the Black Hills, Hot Springs, and Eagle Butte areas. Shirley worked as a waitress during the years while they were in South Dakota because John was working on plastering and stuccoing on houses and commercial buildings. The couple then moved to a farm near Nysted, NE. in 1959 and lived there since. After John passed away, Shirley then moved to the Nebraska Veterans Home in 2008 and has lived there since. Shirley enjoyed the outdoors and taking care of plants and flowers. She also enjoyed making crafts, ceramics and the lost art of letter writing. She collected many antique clocks. Shirley took pleasure in feeding the geese, ducks and squirrels while living at the Veterans Home. Shirley is survived by: sons, Allen Johnston and LaVern Johnston both of Lincoln, NE.; daughters & sons-in-law, Linda & Darrell Johnson of Grand Island, NE. and Sheila & Bob Spitz of Kingman, AZ.; three step children and two foster children; five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; sister, Barbara Winter of Chappell, NE and a host of relatives and friends. Shirley is preceded in death by: parents, husbands, Floyd Johnston on June 29, 1984 and John "Jack" Chipps on August 3, 2008; sister, Edith Jones; brothers, Clifford & Donnie Horn and an infant brother. Interment was in the Nysted Cemetery, Nysted, NE.
