Description	:	"BROADUS -- Shirley Irene Cathey was born Aug. 5, 1935, in Belle Fourche, S.D., the sixth of 10 children of Gerald and Ursula Cathey. Read More	"BROADUS -- Shirley Irene Cathey was born Aug. 5, 1935, in Belle Fourche, S.D., the sixth of 10 children of Gerald and Ursula Cathey. She grew up on the family sheep ranch in southern Carter County, herding sheep, milking cows, feeding bum lambs -- living the life of a Montana ranch girl. She attended country schools in Carter and Powder River County. She graduated from Broadus High School in 1955. That same year, she married Dallas Slayton. Dallas worked for the Montana Highway Department, which took them to various towns across Montana including Forsyth, Baker, Missoula and Fort Benton. They became the parents of four children, daughters Paula and Cathey, and twin sons Tim and Troy. They left Fort Benton in 1973 and moved to Spanaway, Wash., where they had a successful restoration business and later developed a lake resort park. There, they raised their family and decided to move back to Montana after selling the park. Shirley devoted her life to her children, grandchildren and her brothers and sisters. Fiercely loyal, unfailing in her support and encouragement, she was the lodestar of her family. She took special pride and pleasure as the loyal and enthusiastic fan of her grandson, Travis Salter, whose love of the game of football started when he was 5 and took him through college and through several years as #46 for the Outlaw football team in Billings. She raised beautiful flowers and shrubs of all kinds -- loved trees and birds -- she was a watcher of birds and a feeder of hungry cats. She loved music and dancing, family gatherings for any occasion and often fixed a meal, called us to share and visit. She helped us plan and organize several family reunions. Her love of music was wide enough to include Hank Williams, Merle Haggard and Placido Domingo. She spent many hours with old friend Thad, listening to opera recordings. She was a caregiver by nature and found that she had a calling for that work at a nursing home in Fort Benton. Shirley died suddenly on Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007, in Billings, of a ruptured aneurysm. She is survived by her husband, Dallas; daughters Paula Salter of Billings and Cathey Slayton of Graham, Wash.; sons Tim (Linda) of Birney and Troy (Charlotte) of Forsyth; eight grandchildren; her mother, Ursula Lanning of Belle Fourche; sisters, Evelyn 'Trudy' Christiansen (Leon) of Ranger, Ga., Jean Hough and Bonnie (Everett) Burly of Broadus, Rita (Gene) Wice of Palo Pinto, Texas; brothers Allen and Kenneth (Sheila) Cathey of the Bozeman area, Jerry (Norma) Cathey of Hammond and Gary Cathey of Billings; half-sister Sherry Zimmerscheid and half-brother Danny Lanning; many nieces and nephews; and two maternal aunts, Hattie Kaufman of Alzada and Marie Dillard of Fresno, Calif. Preceding her in death was her father, Gerald Cathey; a brother, Alvin; and grandson, Zachary Salter. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, at the United Church of Christ in Broadus. Interment will be at Valley View Cemetery." The Billings Gazette, August 23, 2007
