Shirley Jane Maxson was born in Pasadena, CA, the middle daughter of Archie and Grace (Ridenour) Maxson, and grew up in and graduated from high school in Springdale, IA in 1948. She attended St. Luke's Nursing Program in Cedar Rapids and Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. During college, she met and dated Walter L. Saur. On April 20, 1952, Jane and Walt were married in Elkader, IA. Together they received a tour of our Southern states of LA, GA, AL, FL TX, and OK, courtesy of the Air Force. They moved to Des Moines for Walt to attend Drake Law School, and in 1959 moved to Oelwein, where they would spend the rest of their lives. As a member of Grace United Methodist Church for 61 years, Jane served on most of the Council on Ministries committees, and taught Sunday School during the years her children were in school in Oelwein. She was also in an ecumenical Bible study group, and continuously in a renewal group since it was organized after Key '73. Jane was also a Cub Scout leader; a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for 8 years; spent 30 years as a Red Cross volunteer, starting as a Grey Lady in the '50's on an Oklahoma Air Force base, and in Oelwein making military calls for emergency leaves. Jane was a board member of the American Cancer Society for 10 years, including several years as the Fayette County tobacco chair; and volunteered for a combined 5 years on the Fayette County and Oelwein tourism councils. Jane was a Big Sister volunteer for Volunteers For Youth. She was on the organizing committee and served as the first secretary of the Music and Arts Community Concert Series. Jane and Walt were involved with AFS (American Field Service) International many years, and also were host parents for Anita Hilschman of Germany. Jane served as state AFS weekend coordinator and area counties representative for ten years. Jane chaperoned 38 international AFS students 16 days by bus from Iowa to NY City for their return to their home countries. Jane served as president of the Oelwein Women's Club, Tuesday Tourists Cub and PEO. She also was a volunteer for 7 years and past Chairman of the RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) group who volunteer at Oelwein schools, and helped the kids with reading and math skills. She was an Oelwein High School library volunteer for 4 years. In 1970 Jane was honored as Jaycee's Woman of the Year, and in 2002 the Oelwein Area Professional Women's Club chose Jane as one of six women to honor as Women of the Year. Jane is survived by her three children: Wayne and wife, Christine, of Oelwein; Cindy Saur and husband Thom Grote of Iowa City; and Dixie Saur of Solon; 7 grandchildren: Dr. Karla Saur (Dr. Julian Grizzard), of Seattle, WA; Dr. Natalie Saur, of North Liberty; Emily Piburn (Luke), of Waterloo; Kyle Grote, of Altoona; Evan Grote and fiancee Clarice Miller, of Kansas City, MO; Gabriel Hinman and Ariana Hinman of Solon; great grandson Thomas Piburn of Waterloo; and sister Patricia Small of Pismo Beach, CA; She was preceded in death by her parents, Grace Maxson and Archie Maxson; sister Beverly Techau, brother-in-law Howard Small, and her husband of 61 years, Walt, who passed away January 11, 2014.
