She was born July 21, 1946, the daughter of Mark and Mary Peed Werking, and was a life long resident of the Hagerstown Area. Shirley was a member of Nettle Creek Church of the Brethren and was an active member of New Life Holiness Church, where she had served as Sunday School teacher and organist for 25 years. Root, age 57, of Hagerstown, died Thursday, July 15, 2004, in Reid Hospital, Richmond. She was born July 21, 1946, the daughter of Mark and Mary Peed Werking, and was a life long resident of the Hagerstown Area. Shirley was a member of Nettle Creek Church of the Brethren and was an active member of New Life Holiness Church, where she had served as Sunday School teacher and organist for 25 years. She was a former beautician and a long time employee of Abbott's Candies. She was known to friends and family as a teddy bear enthusiast. She is survived by, her husband of 36 years, John D. Root; her parents, Mark & Mary Werking of Hagerstown; 2 sons, Mathew Root (wife, Tammy) of Richmond, Scott Root (wife, Karin) of Robinson, IL; 4 grandchildren, Jennie and Jackie Alberda and Jarid and Jace Root, all of Robinson, IL; a brother, Roger Werking (wife, Micki) of Churchton, MD. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, July 19, in New Life Holiness Church with Rev. Ronald Coleman and Rev. Kenneth Cowen officiating. Burial will be in Brick Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday in Culberson Funeral Home, Hagerstown, and at the church after 9:30 a.m. Monday. Memorials may be made to New Life Holiness Church, Nettle Creek Church of the Brethren or Hagerstown Church of the Nazarene.
