Shirley was known for handing the broom to students who digressed from the school's curriculum. He has been among the oldest living veterans in Calhoun. Born in Calhoun County, he was the son of the late Charles F. and Etta Jane Ferrell Hosey. He was a US Army veteran of World War II and participated in the invasion at Normandy. He recently recalled his military experiences at a special Veteran's Day tribute organized by the local Senior Center. He was a member of the Brooksville Baptist Church. Family members told the funeral home the humorous and personable man " Will be sadly missed by family and friends, and we know he is in Heaven with his wife Margaret and his family." Surviving, step-daughter, Betty Edwards of Elyria, Ohio; brother and sister-in-law Ernest and Bertha Hosey of Grantsville and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; sisters Retta Heiney and Ruth Wilson; brothers, Romeo, Harry, Harley, Wade and Hale. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 14 at Stump Funeral Home Grantsville with the Rev. Casey Stinespring and the Rev. Jerry Scott officiating. Interment will be in the Betts Cemetery. Visitation from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday.
