She died Friday, July 31, 2009, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, at the age of eighty-one. Shirley was born in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Iowa, and was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. She died Friday, July 31, 2009, at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa, at the age of eighty-one. Shirley was born in Goodrich Township, Crawford County, Iowa, and was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. She attended rural school at Goodrich #5 and graduated in 1945 from Denison High School. She received her normal school training certificate and taught students of grades K through 8 for eight years in rural schools in the Deloit, Kiron and Schleswig areas. On June 8, 1947, Shirley was united in marriage to Virgil Winquist of Kiron, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison. They farmed in the Denison area, and since 1953 lived on a farm near Schleswig, Iowa. To this union three children were born, Stanley Jay, Sydney Ray, and Lynell Gay. They moved to Schleswig, and later resided at the Reed House in Denison, where they enjoyed a wonderful life. She worked as a clerk at the Pump and Shop in Schleswig for several years. Shirley was well known for her creativity in decorating beautiful cakes for many people to commemorate special occasions. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed cooking and planning gatherings for family and friends and attending her children's and grandchildren's sporting and extra-curricular activities. To her children, she was the "best cook in the world." In her leisure time, she'd enjoy visiting with friends while playing cards, finding bargains while shopping and collecting things, especially recipes. Artwork, photos and handwritten letters from her children and grandchildren were especially cherished. Shirley was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison and formerly a member of Dorcas Society. She was also a longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig and their Ladies Aid. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband of over sixty years, Virgil, in 2008. Survivors include two sons: Stanley and his wife Angie; Sydney and his wife Beth; one daughter, Lynell and her husband Bahram; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; three sisters: Marilyn; Evelyn and her husband Bob; Clarion and her husband Melvin; three sisters-in-law: Eleanora, Florence and Ruth; other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, August 3, 2009, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. Rev. Kurt Kaiser officiated the service and graveside rites at Morgan Cemetery in Schleswig, Iowa. Organist Karen Kahl provided accompaniment for hymns, "Lift High The Cross," "I Know That My Redeemer Lives," "What A Friend We Have In Jesus" and "How Great Thou Art." Serving as honorary pallbearers were Erica Hansen Schweller, MoriBeth Hansen, Tara Alexander, Malikah Sadeghi, Alisa Winquist and Aleah Sadeghi. Serving as pallbearers were Robert Schweller, Adam Winquist, Abe Gronau, Aaron Winquist, Mike Alexander and Bob Andresen. The family invited everyone to return to the church and join them in fellowship and lunch served by the Dorcas Society. The Huebner Funeral Home of Denison was in charge of arrangements.
