The funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 18, at 10:30 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Columbus, Nebraska (12.5 miles north) with Rev. Brad Birtell officiating. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 17, from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at the Gass Haney Funeral Home and continue on Thursday from 9:30 - 10:30 AM at the church with a family prayer service at 10:15 AM. Memorials may be directed to St. John's Lutheran School. Shirley was born on March 13, 1945, to Samuel and Eunice (Good) Hawthorne in Fullerton, Nebraska. She attended several different grade schools and graduated from Fullerton High School in 1963. Shirley was united in marriage to Robert Cattau on February 19, 1971, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Columbus. To this union, four children were born. Shirley worked at Educational Service Unit 7 for over 20 years and also served as an EMT for many years. She served as the school secretary at St. John’s Lutheran School for the past four years. Shirley loved flowers, gardening, canning, and especially enjoyed attending her children and grandchildren’s sports events and activities.
