The funeral service will be Friday, February 6, 10:30 A.M. at Gass Haney Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Roselawn Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5:00 - 7:00 P.M. and on Friday from 9:30 - 10:30 A.M. all at the funeral home. Shirley Mae Robertson was born on February 18, 1935 to Ernest and Louise (Winkelman) Oppliger. She married Hugh R. “Bud“ Robertson on December 24, 1953. To this union, three children were born – Susie, Dale and Janet. Shirley held various jobs throughout her life but her most important job of being a Mom…she nailed it. She taught her three children the usual good traits that all mothers aspire to do and then proceeded to go above the call of duty. She instilled a sense of imagination and creativity to her children. They learned they could be anything they wanted to be and it all stemmed from her permission to dream. There were foxholes in the empty lots, forts in downed trees, blanket forts inside the house and they were thrown outside to play every day! She was the “Go to Mom” on the block – instigating water fights, baseball games and slumber parties at her house. All neighborhood children were drawn to her front porch to discuss anything and everything. Her children were envied by others who wished their Mom was more like Shirley. She taught them that the word, can’t, was not to be in their vocabulary. If there was something important, there was a way to achieve it. She gave them the encouragement to figure it out on their own and they did! Through osmosis, she taught them the love of reading. Library trips were abundant and treasured. To this day, all three children have continued to share her love of a good book. They have all been known to get “lost” in a book and ignore the world as it passed them by. Her love of animals, particularly dogs, taught them many things – responsibility, compassion and the cycle of life. Led by her example, the entire family continues to reap the benefits from their four legged friends. Shirley is survived by: Daughter: Susie (Kevin) Vollmer of Grand Island, NE Son: Dale (Maureen) Robertson of Burke, VA Daughter: Janet (Mike) Orcutt of Omaha, NE Her legacy lives on in her grandchildren: Jayne (Chris) Robbins of Lincoln, NE Rachel (Steve) Nicely of Springfield, VA Megan Robertson of New York City, NY Gunnar Orcutt, Jackson Orcutt, and Hattie Orcutt of Omaha, NE Great grandchildren: Skylar Claire, Zander M. C., and Ryker Raedyn Robbins of Lincoln, NE James Ethan and Tye Robertson Nicely of Springfield, VA. Shirley’s family smiles fondly as this next generation gives them every indication that her qualities and traits will continue on in them. Shirley is also survived by: Brother-in-law: Gary (Ann) Robertson of Columbus, NE Sister-in-law: Mrs. Delores Montag of Columbus, NE Brother-in-law: Bernard "Bud" Plantz of FL Shirley was preceded in death: Husband: Hugh “Bud” Robertson in 1993 Parents: Ernest & Louise Winkelman Brothers: Harry, Kenny, Ed, Bud, and Clyde Oppliger Sister: Bernice Larson Memorials can be sent to the family or directly to the Alzheimer’s Association through Community Health Charities of Nebraska.
