Mrs. Hustrulid was born Sept. 11, 1940, in Richardson County, Nebraska, the daughter of Harold Watkins and Wilma (Goolsby) Watkins. She grew up in and around Shenandoah, Iowa and graduated from Shenandoah High School. She then attended Iowa State Teachers College (now University of Northern Iowa) where she received her bachelor's degree, the first in her family to receive a college degree. She obtained her master's degree in education from the University of Northern Colorado – Greeley. She taught business education courses in high schools and worked briefly for the Iowa Department of Education. Most notably, her 40-year education career culminated in many years of teaching at Western Iowa Technical Community College (WITCC) and Morningside University as an adjunct instructor. She was named Instructor of the Year at WITCC. On Aug. 11, 1972, Shirley married the love of her life, Curtis Leroy Hustrulid, in Shenandoah. They resided in Sioux City and raised their daughter, Cynthia. Shirley was involved in church choir, led Bible studies, was a member of PEO and sat on the church council. She volunteered in numerous civic organizations and was a beloved friend to many. Survivors include a daughter, Cynthia Suzanne (Hustrulid) Pfingsten, and two grandchildren, Mallory and Marissa Pfingsten. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and a sister. Her legacy lives on through her daughter and granddaughters, whom she loved dearly. Memorials can be directed to the family for an educational scholarship to honor her years of teaching.
