He married his first cousin, Catherine Emily Crouse, daughter of Henry and Henrietta (Shoup) Crouse, on February 13, 1868. They had a daughter Nancy born in 1871 and a son Walter born in 1880. Nancy married Israel Shaffer in 1891. She died in childbirth of their son, John Ethmer Crouse. John grew to adulthood and married Harriet E. Lake in 1916. They had six children: Harry, Doris, Gayle, Blanche, Jean and Ruby. Walter married Nina M. McFarland in 1907. CROUSE - Former Mills County Resident Dies At Ladysmith, Wis., October 17; Funeral in Malvern Saturday Word was received here last Thursday of the death of S. B. Crouse, a former well known resident of this vicinity, who passed away at the home of his son, Frank, near Ladysmith, Wis., following an extended illness. Short services were held from the late home Friday morning at 9:30 conducted by Rev. Mr. Kelley, pastor of the First M.E. Church of Ladysmith. Mrs. L. Guthrie sang a solo. The remains were brought to Malvern Saturday morning accompanied by his son Frank and wife, and funeral services were held from the First Baptist church Saturday afternoon at two-thirty conducted by the pastor, Rev. J.E. Wilkens, who, by request made by the deceased some time ago, read the 41st Psalm and preached from the thoughts contained therein. Mrs. J.M. Steele and Miss Ruth Caldwell, with Frances Caldwell accompanying at the piano, sang. The Masons had charge of the services at the cemetery. C.D. Greenwood of Emerson giving the beautiful ritualistic service of the order. The pall bearers were brother Masons - Fred Durbin, B.C. Tennant, I.W. Miller, Y.H. Seaton, R.G. Caldwell and Clayton Roberts. Those from a distance attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Crouse (Franklin Aaron) Fort Dodge, Iowa; Mr. and Mrs. John H. Shaffer, Emerson, Iowa; and Mrs. Anna Nellen Knight of Pasadena, Calif. The following obituary was read at the service: Shuble Burcham Crouse was born near Elkin, Wilkes county, North Carolina, June 14, 1842, and died near Ladysmith, Wis., October 17, 1923, aged 81 years, 4 months and 3 days. He was married to Catherine Emily Crouse February 13, 1868. Afterwards they moved to Webster County, Iowa, locating near Fort Dodge, some fifty-five years ago, where they resided until March 1892, when they moved to Mills County, Iowa. Three years ago he moved from Malvern, Iowa to Ladysmith, Wisc. To this union were born two children, a daughter, Nancy Virginia, deceased, and one son, Walter F. B. Crouse of Ladysmith, Wis., with whom he made his home since the death of his wife four years ago. There is also one grandson, John H. Shaffer and three great grandchildren all of Emerson, Iowa. Mr. Crouse served four years in the Confederate Army, Company F, 37th North Carolina Regiment, serving under General Lee and "Stonewall" Jackson. He was present at the surrender of Lee to Grant at Appomattox Court House. He was a member of the Baptist church, living a consistent Christian life and faithfully serving his God to the end. He was also a member of the Masonic Order for over 50 years, his last affiliations being with Silver Urn Lodge 234 A.F. and A.M. at Malvern, Iowa. Mr. Crouse was of a family of 12 children, he being the last [should say second of four] of four boys. Two sisters residing in North Carolina survive him. In his pioneer days while living in Webster County, he was always ready and willing to help those in need of assistance, during sickness and death. He was a kind and loving husband and father, and little children were his delight for he enjoyed having them visit him. During his conscious hours he asked to be read to from the Bible naming the chapter he wanted read also asking help in repeating the Lord's Prayer.
