Salter died last Thursday at his home near Florien, laid to rest at Antioch. Our beloved husband and father was born in Sabine parish, Ward 2, May 5, 1866, being a son of Moses and Martha Salter. He lived in Sabine parish until 1899, was married to Miss Cora M. Peters and moved out in Texas, his first companion being a true Christian died in 1892, no children having been born to the union; her remains rest in the McGregor, Texas cemetery. After the death of his wife, he returned to Louisiana and married Lona E. Callaway in 1894; she was a Christian and they both united with the Little Flock Baptist Church in 1894. He was ordained a deacon and moved his membership to Antioch Baptist Church in the year 1912, where he was received as a deacon and served in that capacity until death. Seven children were born to the second marriage, two daughters and five sons; one son and one daughter preceded him to yonder glory world. The second wife died in 1910. In the year he and the surviving companion, Lizzie E. Salter, were married, bringing into one family one of the largest families of boys in the community, and no better peace, harmony and love could have been instituted and maintained in a family of twelve boys and one girl, a step-mother and step-father. It's been said time and again in the home one could not detect any difference in the love and affection bestowed on these children by a step-father and step-mother. So surely it was the ever-presence of the Holy Spirit in the hearts of the parents. Dad lived a quiet and peaceful life, ever-mindful of the best interest of his community and God's Will. He never dreaded death, always said he was ready and willing to go at God's command. He was confined to bed Sept. 13, suffered with a smile typical of the life he lived ever-smiling and trusting in God. He intimated time and time again that all was well with him. He was sick only 19 days, died 6 p.m., Oct. 1, being 65 years, 4 months, 25 days old. He is survived by an angel wife and faithful companion, Lizzie E. Salter, four sons, T. Crockett, Ottis L. of Florien, Leo E. Salter of Shreveport, Valery H. Salter of Gandy; one daughter Mrs. Lona Belle Anthony of Florien; five step-sons, T. Ray, M. Don and J. Lee Salter of Florien, Victor L. Salter of El Paso, Texas, and Julian L. Salter of Port Arthur, Texas, all the children being married with a family of their own, including 15 grandchildren, all being at his bedside in the last sad hours to comfort and cheer him to the fullest extent of their ability, as wel as that of his four brothers and one sister and many friends and neighbors. The funeral was conducted Friday at Antioch church by his pastor, the Rev. J.M. Pate. An immense crowd and many flowers attested the love with which he was held. [His son, Ottis L. Salter] All the above and more is true of this good man. He has gone to that sinless and happy land. Surely the divine Word will apply to him.
