She was born November 16, 1922, in Monroe County, the daughter of William and Cornelia Wouterse Schinkel. She attended school at Lacey. Sara Bloem, 87, of New Sharon died Friday, April 30, 2010, at Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab. She was born November 16, 1922, in Monroe County, the daughter of William and Cornelia Wouterse Schinkel. She attended school at Lacey. Following school she stayed at home to help her family on the farm. On February, 20, 1947, she was united in marriage to Melvin Bloem at her parents' home in rural Oskaloosa. Following their marriage, she stayed at home to help Melvin on the farm and to raise their family. She was a very good gardener and enjoyed tending to her large garden; she also enjoyed doing yard work. She was a member of 1st Christian Reformed Church and enjoyed providing and serving meals for Coffee break. She enjoyed quilting and knitting; she donated many knitted baby items to charity.She was active in Willing Workers at the Oskaloosa Christian School, and was also instrumental in getting the hot lunch program started at the Christian School. She was very committed to her family and being a farmer's wife.Her family includes her husband of over 63 years, Melvin Bloem of New Sharon; their children and spouses: Phil and Carrie Ann Bloem of New Sharon, Twila and Gaylord DeJong of New Sharon, and Rex and Sandy Bloem of Indianola; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters: Cora Lourens and Delia VanZee; and three brothers: Dick, William Jr., and Joe Schinkel. Funeral services for Sara Bloem will be held Tuesday, May 4, 2010,at 10:30 a.m. in the First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa with Pastor Al Bandstra officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemeteryin Oskaloosa, committal rites will be given by Pastor Jamie Bogaard. There will be a family prayer service led by Pastor Dale Visser at 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday in the fellowship hall of the church. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Monday morning after 9 and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 5-7 Monday evening to greet friends and relatives. Memorials maybe made to Mahaska Hospice.
