Description	:	Signe Grosfield, beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend died Tuesday, November 30, 1999 at her home in Lincoln. She was born in Knox, North Dakota on February 9, 1911 to the Rev. and Mrs. Nels Holm. She attended schools in Clarkston, Washington and Rapelje and earned a teaching certificate from Eastern Montana State Normal School in Billings. Signe was just 12 years old when her mother died, and the lessons of responsibility and survival stayed with her always. She was born in Knox, North Dakota on February 9, 1911 to the Rev. and Mrs. Nels Holm. She attended schools in Clarkston, Washington and Rapelje and earned a teaching certificate from Eastern Montana State Normal School in Billings. Signe was just 12 years old when her mother died, and the lessons of responsibility and survival stayed with her always. Being a young adult during the depression left an indelible mark on her thinking resulting in a great respect for the thrifty Scandinavian ways. After teaching for several years, Signe married Edwin Grosfield on June 29, 1932 in the Big Timber Lutheran Church (Sweet Grass County). They lived in Rapelje, Columbus and Clyde Park before embarking on the adventure of moving with their six children to a ranch at Lincoln in 1948. Signe was very involved in ranch and community life. Education was a high priority in her life. She was a substitute teacher in the Lincoln School and served on the school board for several years. Signe was active in the Lincoln Community United Methodist Church and Pinegrove Extension Homemakers Club. She was instrumental in establishing the Lincoln Library and served as a volunteer librarian for many years. Signe was a life long student of history and was very proud of her Norwegian heritage. The ranch house in Lincoln was always open to anyone needing a physical or spiritual refuge and most especially to anyone needing a good meal. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin; and two brothers, Norman and Paul Holm. Survivors include her three sons, Abe and Paul of Lincoln and Norman of Helena; three daughters and sons-in-law, Syvlia and John Gilliam of Missoula, Andrea nad Jerre Sumter of Benecia, California and Mary and Rick Sampsen of Dagmar; nine grandchildren; one great grandchild; three brothers and their wives, Gary and Evelyn Holm of Lincoln, Monte and Ruth Holm of Moses Lake, Washington and Oscar and Jo Holm of Marysville, Washington; and sisters, Ann Sheppard of Helena, Ann and Bruce Thomas of Seattle, Washington and Ruth and Hal Sawyer of Seattle. Memorial services will be conducted at 11 a.m., Friday, December 3 at the Lincoln Community United Methodist Church. Interment services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, December 4 at the Mountain View Cemetery in Big Timber. Pall bearers will be her nine grandchildren. The family prefers memorials to the Lincoln Library, P.O. Box 309, Lincoln, MT 59639 or to the Lincoln Community United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 393, Lincoln, MT 59639.
