Description	:	Parents: Hugh Kelso "Kelsey" Gilmore (ca. 1779-1831) Elizabeth Shelley Gilmore (ca. 1776-1869) His family was living on Wolfe Island, Ontario, Canada when 24-year-old Silas decided to head west in 1838 and take the U.S. government up on its newly opened free land in the Northwest Territories. He arrived in Delaware County, IA in late 1838 and helped to found "The Colony" Township in 1839, where he built a cabin in the spring of that year. In April 1844 he married Mariah (Maria) Elizabeth Phillips of Delhi, Delaware County, IA. She was "The Colony's" first school teacher in Colesburg. Served two years as Delaware County Supervisor, two years as Delaware County Assessor, and 14 years on the Colesburg City Council. Silas farmed until his wife's death in 1872 and then he opened a general store in Greeley, IA in partnership with his son, Silas Jr. He became affiliated with the firm Harvey L. Hopkins, manufacturers of mowers, and sold their products through his store. In 1879 he sold his interest in this firm and moved to Ida County, IA where he opened stock (beef) farms in Ida, Clay and Buena Vista Counties. He was a resident of Storm Lake, Buena Vista County at the time of his death. "He traveled to Mapleton, IA on Saturday, July 14 to visit his son, A.B. (Simeon) Gilmore, and to consult his physician, Dr. Davis, about his black erysipelas condition. On Thursday the 19th he took a turn for the worse and he died at 2:00 PM on Friday, July 20. His body was moved to the Mapleton cemetery on Saturday and his funeral services were conducted on Sunday morning. Seven of his ten children were able to attend his funeral services in Mapleton."
