Silas spent his early childhood life in Audubon, Iowa and with his parens moved to Abilene, Kansas, Lincoln, Nebr., Topeka, Kansas and back to Audubon. Silas spent his early childhood life in Audubon, Iowa and with his parens moved to Abilene, Kansas, Lincoln, Nebr., Topeka, Kansas and back to Audubon. Silas was 26 when he married Mary Flynn on March 25, 1891 at Audubon. They farmed in Kansas and South Dakota. Linnie Loretta was their only child. After her birth they returned to a farm near Audubon. Because of family interference over religion, Silas and Mary were divorced. Silas married Ruth Naomi Hazen Dec. 30, 1900 at Ottawa, Kansas. Ruth was born Jan. 27, 1884 near Marshall, Ill. They farmed at Mt. Vernon, South Dakota until 1903 when they moved to Great Bend, Kansas. In 1905 they moved to a farm near Mo. Valley, Iowa. After a time thy moved near Dunlap where they lived on various farms until in 1929 Salas purchased about 18 acres of timber ground 4 miles northwest of Dunlap in Crawford Co. The acreage was bordered on one side by the Boyer River and on the opposite side by a dirt road which became the detour route at the time Highway 30 was put in. The Smith family cleared the land and built a two story six room house. When the family moved in, the house was lighted by Aladdin and kerosene lamps. Silas neither smoked nor drank. He was a strict loving father..... ....Silas remained on the farm until his death Dec. 16, 1932 from double pneumonia, leaving his wife and 5 chilren still at home. Ruth passed away Sept. 17, 1944, leaving 9 of the 13 children she borne for Silas. There were Leona Berger Virgil, Sherman, Herman, Lena Jacob, Leta Foscalina, Margaret Wolf, Martin and Perry. Alfred, Sadie, Della and Dellfa had died in infancy. ...the Smith family home was sold....Today the dirt road, river bridge, trees and the farm house and buildings are gone. What was once a farm and a home for Silas Harrison Smith and his wife Ruth and the children is now just another corn field in Iowa.
