Dodson of Colton and Miss Jennie Workman of Cortland, Kan., in marriage this morning. The Los Angeles Times (Los Angeles, CA.), P. 7, Col. 5 Sun., Jun. 25, 1893 A marriage license has been granted to Silas Lester Dodson, aged 23, a native son, resident of Colton, and Jennie Workman, aged 24, a native of Iowa and resident of Cortland, Kan. The Daily Times-Index (San Bernardino, CA.), P. 5, Col. 1 Sat., May 16, 1896 A DOSE OF MORPHINE Suicide of Silas Dodson of South Riverside. He Is Found In a Room at the St. Charles - He Is Well Known In This City. Silas Dodson, a young man 25 years of age, and the son of Henry Dodson of Colton, committed suicide yesterday by taking morphine. He was found in a room at the St. Charles hotel at 7 o'clock last night, and the circumstances would indicate that he had then been dead 8 or 10 hours. Dodson has been in the employ of the South Riverside Water company. He formerly lived here, where he is related to a number of families, but recently has been in Riverside county. Thursday evening he came to this city, driving from Riverside and on the street he met Jesse Case, who was his cousin. The two were together for some time and finally went to the St. Charles hotel where Dodson said he wished to secure a room. The two separated there, and so far as known, that was the last seen of Dodson alive. Yesterday his wife and child came to the home of Dodson, Sr., between this city and Colton, and were in great distress over the disappearance of the husband and father. Word was brought on to this city, and a general search was maintained yesterday afternoon, but without results, although for some reason no one thought of going to his room at the hotel. About 7 o'clock in the evening, the clerk in the hotel, in looking through the key box, found that the key to the room occupied by Dodson was not in its place. A bell boy was sent up stairs to see if the key had been left in the door, and when he arrived there he found the door unlocked and opening it, discovered Dodson in bed, dead. Coroner Keating was summoned, and word sent to Barton & Catick. When they arrived they found that Dodson had been dead not less than 8 or 10 hours. He was undressed, his clothes piled on a chair near the bed. In one of his pockets, a bottle half-filled with morphine was found, but with no label to show where it had been purchased. The only mark was the price, a cost mark and the figures, "55". This told the story of the suicide. A card was also found on which was written the following, presumably addressed to his wife and little girl: "Jennie and Gladys: I am to blame. I take all the blame on myself. It is better for me to die and I die of my own free will. Good bye. S. L. DODSON." For some reason, Coroner Keating ordered strict silence on the part of everyone who knew anything about it, and no attempt was made to identify the body, for at that time the suicide was not connected with the man whose family had been hunting for him. This morning his father was in town again and some one who knew of the suicide told him and took him to Barton & Catick's, where he at once identified the body. The friends of the deceased say they are entirely at a loss to account for the suicide. So far as known there are no family difficulties, nor are there any particular financial reasons which should have induced him to take his life. When Jesse Case parted company with him Thursday night, there was nothing in Dodson's manner that was unusual, although it is probable that he had the drug in his pocket at that time. No arrangements have as yet been made for the inquest.
