Description	:	Silas Simon FORMIN Parent of Chas & Edward, Mrs. Harry Bricker & Mrs Newton Parrott. ∼At the time of his death he was the oldest living settler in Castle Grove. He settled upon his farm 51 years before when this part of the country was still part of Wisconsin Territory and is believed to be the first person to fire a rifle in Castle Grove. He settled upon his farm 51 years before when this part of the country was still part of Wisconsin Territory and is believed to be the first person to fire a rifle in Castle Grove. He had lived here all his life with the exception of three years during the California Gold Rush, where he was left to die on the prairie by his two companions who did not believe he would survive his illness. They left him with a coffee pot for water and staked around his body to keep small animals away and make a marker so someone would find his body. He improved and found water and a dead duck that was floating on the river that kept him alive until another party found him. He had no weapons and only a coffee pot for water in his possession. His obituary says his remains were buried in the Castle Grove Cemetery, but must have been removed to Oakwood cemetery at some point.
