Read More	The Life of Silas Standish 1839 - 1870 Silas Standish was born on January 4, 1839, in Vernon Township, Washington County, IN, the son of Anna Maudlin and William Standish. His brother Benjamin was born on April 11, 1840, when Silas was 1 year old. His brother Miles was born in 1843 when Silas was 4 years old. His brother Levi was born on May 7, 1847, when Silas was 8 years old. His brother John I. was born in September 1850 when Silas was 11 years old. His mother Anna passed away on April 30, 1853, when Silas was only 14 years old. Five months later, his father William remarried. His second wife was Margaret Jane Buchanan Hinds, a widow herself. His half-brother Enoch Franklin "Frank" was born on April 16, 1854, when Silas was 15 years old. Silas Standish married Polly Ann Hatfield in Washington on September 14, 1858, when he was 19 years old. They had three children during their marriage. This marriage was written down in the family bible of the Hatfield family. His son William Nelson was born on June 27, 1860, in Washington, Indiana. In 1860, he bought a lot in the town of Campbellsburg, IN. According to the History of Campbellsburg, 1849-1949, compiled by Claude E. Cook, indexed by James Boling and published by the Washington County Indiana Historical Society, page 33: "Years ago there were two other very similar brick homes [in the town]. ... The other was located on a lot purchased by Silas Standish on October 31, 1860, being only a lot or two east of the Chastain property...torn down about 1914." (Book can be purchased from the Society at the John Hay Center in Salem, IN.) 1860 Map of Washington County Indiana, Vernon Township, shows he owned 160 acres in Vernon. (This map is published by the Washington Co. IN Historical Society and can be purchased from them at the John Hay Center in Salem, IN.) His son Miles Lafayette was born on July 11, 1862. He was taxed for one horse and buggy in 1862. He registered for Civil War Draft on 1 July 1863 • Madison, Washington, Indiana. His brother Miles died on August 16, 1864, in Andersonville, Georgia, at the prison camp when Silas was 25 years old. His son Alva Grant was born on September 3, 1865. Silas Standish died on January 8, 1870, as a young father, at the age of 31. He died of typhoid per John Maudlin's 1970 letter. He was buried at the Banks-Standish Cemetery. Silas is on a stone with his wife Polly who died after him. His mother Anna Maudlin is also buried there. All others mentioned in this summary are buried elsewhere. Summary written by Linda S. Levi's father was Israel Standish whose father was Samuel Standish, whose father was Josiah Standish, the son of Captain Myles Standish of the Mayflower. The wife of Silas Standish of this memorial was Polly Ann Hatfield. Polly was a native of Howard Township and daughter of John N. and Susannah (Lockhart) Hatfield, pioneer settlers of Washington County, Indiana
