Newspaper article from Jean Jensen: Bellevue, Iowa Thursday Novenber 30, 1978 In the spring of 1852 the Simmeon and Eunice Hatheway family arrived from Vermont, along with many other families like themselves. With them they brought 24 cows, which was a good number in those days, a few horses and some machinery. These times are related by Mrs. Clarence Jackson of Preston, great-great-granddaughter of the Hatheways. She relates that native Americans, who were supposed to be living on a reservation at this time but returned to the rivers and streams of Jackson County each summer, were still in the area when her ancestors arrived. The Hatheways first went to St. Louis and then traveled up the Mississippi River to the Van Buren Township area. Here they took up residence east of Buck-Eye on the road to Mt. Algors. A log cabin was constructed and some years later, as need and finance permitted, a new frame home was constructed adjacent to the log cabin with the logs being covered with the same type of siding. Simmeon Hatheway was a farmer and his wife Eunice, who had had some formal education, was a school teacher. Eunice also had some knowledge of medicine, having many times accompanied the doctor in Vermont on his calls. So with her she brought a handbook of medicine, the traditional Bible and a kit containing most of the medicines available in those days. After the Hatheways arrived here, word spread that Eunice had some knowledge of medicine and mid-wifery. As a result, she was often called upon to give aid to the folks of Van Buren and Iowa Townships. He married Eunice Powell on 09 Feb 1808 in Lanesboro, MA. He was the father of six known children: 1) Lucy Hatheway b. 1810 d. 1897 2) Jay Hatheway b. 1812 d. 1812 3) Pamela Joy Hatheway b. 1814 d. 1816 4) Monica Hatheway b. 1817 d. 1908 5) Guy Hatheway b. 1822 d.1867 6) Jay Hatheway, who married Mary Ann Crannell. b. 1829 d.1890
