Simeon Pope was a Revolutionary soldier from Henniker, NH. He served in Capt. Rowell's company in 1779. He resided in Morgan, VT in 1816, Sandwich, NH in 1824 (Fisher and Fisher, 1995, p. 423). He received a pension. The History Weare, NH (page 228) refers to four men who were mustered by Col. Joseph Kelley on 20 Jun 1778. They included Simeon Pope of Henniker, who enlisted for one year. Simeon Pope's Revolutionary Pension Files indicates that Simeon applied for a pension 3 Aug 1824, when he was living in Sandwich, NH. At that time he had no family living with him and he had no property. He had previously lived in Ohio, but returned to New Hampshire where he had family connections. He returned to Derby in 1824. The pension file indicates that Simeon's pension was transferred to Vermont on 4 Sep 1829, to be sent care of Timothy Herman in Derby, VT. His widow, Judith, applied from Orleans County, VT on 8 Jun 1848 when she was 84 years of age. The transcribed pension file says that her name was Judith Blood; this is an error. Her sister Susannah Blood, age 77, of Windsor, submitted an affidavit in 1849 that states her sister's maiden name as Judith Adams. Also in the pension file is an affidavit from Charles Merrifield, town clerk in Windsor, VT, that lists the living children of Thomas and Judith, with their dates and places of birth. Daughter Tirzah Willey also submitted an affidavit after the death of her mother. Both her parents were living with her at the time of their deaths in 1848. She refers to her father's residence in Morgan, VT in 1816 "in a state of partial insanity". At that time he left his family for "parts unknown" and did not return until 1824, after his pension had been granted. Curtis Willey also submitted an affidavit on 9 Apr 1849 stating that he was the administrator of Judith Pope's estate. He lists her living children: Sampson Pope of Conneaut, PA; Clarissa Wilcox and Amanda Boynton of Stanstead, QC; Marshall Pope of Barnston, QC; John Pope of Albany, VT; and Mary Patterson of Glover, VT. The Derby town records indicate that Judith (Adams) Pope died 18 Aug 1844. However, she almost certainly died in 1848. Whether she is also buried in this cemetery is unknown.
