Rev. Dean preached the funeral sermon and the Masons conducted their funeral services at the cemetery, led by Bro. Geo. H. Hiller, master of the Surprise Lodge. Rev. Dean called attention to the mighty changes since Simeon Barker was born into this world. Maine, his native state was a Territory - a colony at the time. He was a toddler when Andrew Jackson defeated Gen. Packenham at the battle of New Orleans.He was a young man, 32 years of age when the war with Mexico broke out. Grandfather Barker outlived his wife forty years, and all his children except two sons - one of whom lives in Indiana, and our fellow townsman, W. W. Barker with whom he has lived for thirty years. He was converted when fourteen years of age, and united with the Methodist Curch of which he has been a constant member for 78 years. For the past five years deceased has been nearly blind and deaf, but fortunately, did not suffer much. He was one of those loveable old men whom his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren revered. He was a kindly man who thought well of his friends and neighbors. He was a true christian. In talking to Rev. Dean a few days before he died he said he was ready to go and had been for a long time. While he was not chafing at delay, he was hoping the Lord would soon see fit to take him. It was our good fortune to know this old Father in Isreal in the days gone by, whe he was hale and strong, and can testify to the good influence to his life and charater among those who came in touch with his kind and generous influence. Deceased came to Butler County in 1882, where he has resided with his son ever since." The Press, David City, Nebraska, 1905.
