More than a year ago Mr. Perin had a very serious heart attack and his life seemed to hang in the balance for several weeks. Then he improved enough so that he has been able to come down town occasionally. However, he has suffered very much from a cancer that finally took one eye in spite of treatment at a hospital in Lincoln a few years ago and threatened at times to extend to the other. This and his age and hernia has kept his health rather poor for some time so that death was not unwelcome to him, no matter how reluctant were his relatives and friends to have him go. The funeral was held at the Methodist Episcopal Church in this city Wednesday afternoon, commencing at two o'clock. Fay W. Spooner was the funeral director and Rev. Victor R. Bell, pastor of the church, had charge of the services and preached the funeral sermon. The singing was by Mrs. Wm. R. Kidder and Mrs. Bert Amos. Mrs. Robert G. Brown was at the piano. The songs used were "Jesus Keep Me Near The Cross," "Beautiful Isle," and "Nearer, My God, To Thee.” The pall bearers were Albert M. Smith, Milo H. Moore, Roy L. Sweet, Harry A. Sherman, Jens H. Ottun and Forrest J. Abbott. Interment was made in the Sargent cemetery in which his father was interred nearly fifty years ago, and his mother more than twenty five years ago. Similien La Branche Perin was, born May 13, 1862, on a southern plantation twenty miles north of New Orleans, Louisiana, and he passed away at the home of his son Harold I. Perrin, in Sargent, Nebraska, on August 8, 1938, at the age of 80 years, 2 months, and 20 days. Mr. Perin's parents were Samuel and 'Sophia (Reaublau) Perin, his father having been born in Indiana and his mother in Louisiana. He was the oldest of eleven children born to them. When Similien L. Perin was about five years of age his parents brought him north and located at Bluer Brads, Iowa. There he attended school held in a log school house. When he was about nine, his parents took him to Colorado at the time of the gold rush at Pike's Peak. That was in the year 1861. They did not stay in Colorado long but returned to Council Bluffs, Iowa, quite a lot of which was surveyed by his father. The father's duties as a railroad surveyor took him to Minnesota and he had young Similien assist as chain bearer and rodman. Being in that state some time, the boy also attended school in that state. In the course of time as he grew up he was employed by his father's cousin Ezra Perin Savage of Westside Iowa. In the spring of 1879 he came west in a covered wagon and arrived in the vicinity of what is now Sargent on April 9 that year and broke eighty acres of prairie for Mr. Savage. Part of Sargent now stands on the land Mr. Perin broke that summer fifty nine years ago. Mr. Perin returned to Iowa that fall but came back the spring of 1880, eventually took land south of the river and made that his home for a number of years. June 15, 1882, he was united in marriage to Sophia F. Tobias. To this union four children were born. The first, Vida, died at the age of three years. The others are Harold I. Perrin of this city, Louis Edwin Perrin of Grand Junction, Colorado, and Watt W. Perin who moved from here to the vicinity of Chewelah, Washington, this last spring. A few years ago Mr. Perin told the writer he had taken part in the organization of three school districts here. The first, was school district No. 7 of Custer County and at the time organized was very large. It is the West Union school district. The second one was district No. 8 and is now known as the Morris school. The third was the one in which his homestead was located and is school district No. 188 and is, known as the Stokes school. Thirty five years or more ago, Mr. Perin and family moved from the farm to Sargent, and he operated a creamery for a while. In the spring of 1906 he became the Sargent Postmaster, and continued as such for about seven years. Besides his wife and children and grandchildren, he is survived by two sisters, five brothers, a number of nephews, nieces, other relatives and a large number of friends
