Description	:	Simon D. Wyckoff, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Wyckoff, was born June 23, 1848 in New York State, a direct descendant of Pieter Claeson Wyckoff. Simon moved with his parents, and brothers and sisters, who were James and John, Margaret (John Krauth), Louise (Sam Scott), Alice (Andrew Chapman), and Mary (Jim Gaudy), to Hedrich in Wapello County. They later moved to the Massena area. When Simon was 15 he falsified his age and joined the Union Army during the Civil War. Wyckoff, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Wyckoff, was born June 23, 1848 in New York State, a direct descendant of Pieter Claeson Wyckoff. Simon moved with his parents, and brothers and sisters, who were James and John, Margaret (John Krauth), Louise (Sam Scott), Alice (Andrew Chapman), and Mary (Jim Gaudy), to Hedrich in Wapello County. They later moved to the Massena area. When Simon was 15 he falsified his age and joined the Union Army during the Civil War. He was a member of the Second Iowa Fourth Division of the 15th Army Corporation, commanded by John A. Logan of Illinois. He was a member of the famous "Iowa Hornet's Nest" brigade. He saw service in the "Battle of Shiloh," in the "Battle of the Wilderness" and marched with Sherman to the sea. While serving in the war, a very good friend of Simon's, Cyrus Buckner, was seriously injured and as he lay dying in Simon's arms, he made Simon promise to take care of his wife, Kate, and daughter, Della. When the war was over, Simon came home and married Kate (Downs, Buchner). To this union was born Jesse, who married Nellie Black; Henry, who married Alice Hollen; Ada, who married Merrick Moody; and John, who married Ethel McCormick. The stepdaughter, Della, married Fred Weimer. She was the mother of Dr. Frank Weimer. Simon and Kate settled on a farm in Section 31 of Victoria Township, where they raised their family, later moving to Massena. Simon was vice-president of the Farmers Savings Bank for many years. After the death of Kate in the late 1920's, Simon made his home with his son, John, and wife, Ethel. He passed away in February of 1937. He was the last of the Civil War veterans living in Cass County, Iowa.
