Gaumer, son of Daniel and Elizabeth Gaumer was born in Wellsburg, PA., on June 3, 1848 and passed away at the home of his daughter in Des Moines on August 20, 1932, aged 84 years, 2 months and 22 days. His parents died while he was a youth of 14 years. Two years later the orphaned children, who lost father and mother within six months , came westward to Iowa and were pioneers of Victor. Here Simon Gaumer grew to young manhood, wooed and won Miss Amanda Manatt for his bride in 1873. The home was established in Victor and they continuned to reside here until 1892 when he, with his wife and two small daughters, moved to Des Moines where he became an employee of the Merchants Transfer Co., remaining with that company almost thirty-five years. Almost seven years ago the beloved wife and mother was called to her eternal home and since then the bereaved husband and father felt keenly the loss of his companion for more than half a century. He enjoyed the faithful love and solicitious care of his daughters, especially the sacrificing devotion of Mrs. James Merwin, with whom he spent the declining years of his life. During the past two years he had the constant care of his nephew, L. S. Harden, a professional masseur, whose skill and tenderness did much toward making the sunet of his life as easy as possible. Surrounded by children and grandchildren, Mr. Gaumer quietly slept until the Angel of Death severed the last earthly tie and he passed from life to join the beloved ones gone before. He leaves to revere his memory: two daughters, Mrs. John H. Thompson and Mrs. James R. Merwin, a grandson, Merle E. Thompson and a great granddaughter, Betty Jeane Thompson, all of Des Moines; two sisters also survive, Mrs. Nerva Sage of Montana and Mrs. Lavina Jordan of Victor. The funeral cortage came to Victor where services were held in the M.E. church at 3 o'clock, Sunday afternoon. The body of Mr. Gaumer was cosigned to its last resting place in the I.O.O.F. cemetery beside the dear wife, with whom he spent so many happy years.
